Following The Migration

In the Masai Mara last year, we were just on time to witness an immense gathering of wildebeest and several river crossings. The most exciting moments were when we were surrounded by thousands of wildebeest and, when driving towards the Mara River to see them crossing, we were caught up by the wildebeest and for some time drove right in the middle of them, this way feeling totally part of the migration. I stood up on the car seat, trying to frame, focus and shoot while bumping against the roof.
I will be happily leading this trip again in 2017.

Ingrid: it's not often that I'm a fan of butt shots, but this is an exception. The animals themselves form a leading line and the open space emphasizes the horns of the one wildebeest. The dust really adds to the atmsophere. Richard

This is beautiful.  The shallow DOF combined with the dust which creates an overall softness to the image makes this look more like a painting than a photograph.  Very nicely rendered!

Hi Ingrid,

I like this shot a lot - nice chaos and the dust adds great ambience to the scene (at least to my eye). In a perfect world (the one where a D800e can be shot at ISO 4000 and produce noise-free images!) I think I'd like the shot even MORE if you could have stopped down and increased the DoF...but I fully understand the constraints of vehicle motion you were deallng with.

Nicely done - and thanks for sharing this one! GRT! enlightened

Cheers...

Brad

Interesting to see the migration from the rear and being a part of it. It must have been a tremendous experience. The warm lighting, dust clouds and your choice of dof make this a very interesting and unique image - different from other images of the migration I have seen.

Thanks all for your nice comments! It was indeed a unique and great thing to be part of....

Appreciating what you're saying, Brad, but I personally would not increase the dof as I think that would remove some of the atmosphere myself. The shallow dof imo adds to the dusty and painterly effect, but that's just my opinion.

Thanks again all! crying

Grt, as always cool

Ingrid.

The color of light that you are emphasizing is so key to making this special.
