This image is part of a series of 12 that I recently used in a large format calendar on Africa. The calendar was rewarded 1st Prize in the 2008 International Photography Awards (IPA) last week.

It was shot in Madagascar just after sunrise. I had set up my tripod and basically just waited for someone or something to appear in the frame.

Congrats on the award Marsel, these trees are always great subjects and the cart at sunrise is a wonderful touch.

Beautiful image Marsel. You have carefully positioned yourself to arrange the objects perfectly in the frame. Liked the bright sunshine & the diffused light around. The bullock cart adds the much needed element in the frame.

Absolutely beautiful shot. A very creative compositon, lights and the story. I like the creative distortion - it adds extra perspective to the image.
Very magical image.

So very nice!
Being the 4x5" landscape photographer, I would have tried to correct the perspective of the trees and such with my field camera, but by then the oxcart would have been gone...
Congratulations to that win, this is quite one of the harder awards to get, actually!

Congrats on the win ! This by all standards has got to be one of the best images I have seen in a long time. The detail, warm light, the human element, all come together so nicely !

Thats one great travelscape image Marsel. wonderful work. For me digital just doesnt render the tonal graduations around the sun as film would and because of this it looks a little funny. If you could do something with the exposure a little and just soften it a little and try and make it look so the tonal graduations arent so pronounced ..that would be the only small nit i can see to this one for me.

Marsel, Congrats on another award and the EP! This is gorgeous! Having been at this unbelievable location myself it brings back great memories also. To be honest, I don't know what to think of the leaning trees. I now from this position it is difficult to get a wide-angle view without the 30+m high trees leaning, but I always find this looking awkward and in my images of the Avenue I have always tried to correct this and never even considered using this distortion as a creative composition element. Thumbs up for your creativity once more :toast:

Outstanding image Marsel. I would not be surprised at all if this also wins the 'Man and Nature' NPN editor's pick of the year. This image captures the essence of exotic travel! :toast:
