Inland Crawl

by Steve Sieren

Gallery: LandscapePosted March 9, 20091,501 views43 comments
A lone oak bearing signs of life with a small set of spring leaves while coastal fog hits a speed bump and slowly crawls inland.

There is my shot at trying to sound poetic or close to some book narrator. I've been lurking around this mountain for a long time never really catching any extravagent light on it and the sky at the same time. I've been trying to get used the long lens landscapes here with the 70-200 lens. I'm not finding it that easy.

F13 30 secs for the crawl

Got a larger version up also

Beautiful shot Steve, I saw this on Miranda, I was hoping you would post it over here.
First, I think the composition is excellent.
Secondly, the color layering is fascinating.
Near, Middle, Far, all in sharp focus, and not always an easy task with that great lens.
Well done.

This is gorgeous Steve. Simply wonderful. The lone oak against the pastel colored clouds and the mountain is fantastic. Love the composition with the panoramic format and your use of the long lens. Wish the lines of the roads in the foothills were not there. Not being a fan of a lot of digital manipulation, in all honesty, because of how great this is, I would be tempted to clone out the road. Excellent.

This is a beauty, Steve. Well composed and great light and color. That tree would make a great subject on its own.

Very well done. The quality of light is extremely nice as is the compression from the long-ish focal length. To major complaints here except the big version seems a bit "crunchy". I bet that 70-200 on the MkII is a sweet combo.

Wow! What a great composition ...reminds me of the hill country around Three Rivers which means much to me. Great colors. I would like to see this as a large print ..so that the sharpening for web would not impact the twigs and its wee-halos. Congrats. Ken S

Very nice, Steve. The background tells me that this is my part of the world and I'm partial to it. The chaparral around those mountains is welcome sight.

Steve, this is excellent. I have to say for me it is the tree with the FG foliage and terrain that really makes the shot. Very nice indeed.

I know what you mean about using a long lens for landscapes. But I think you did a beautiful job with this one. I love the sharp details of the oak tree. And its really nice to see some color! Its been so dingy here at home. Very well done.

This is exquisite. While the remainder of the scenery is quite something, it is the tree itself that really captures my heart. Congratulations on a wonderfully made photograph.

steve, i like this one. my only tiny wish is that the tree was somewhat separated from the pink band - thus that it was poking into the blue section slightly more. small nit to lovely photo

Thanks all. I took this from a sloped hillside so I was lucky the tree and mountain were at a similar perspective. Making one bigger of smaller was not an option. Trying new things is often frustrating but pays off eventually. Carrying around the extra 3 pounds is annoying at first but you just get used to it and helps out even more if you decide to leave it at home and go lite and fast just not like those Mt hood climbers.

Gabi, I was not going for cute but it's gotta be the pinkness that's doing that, thanks.

Hi Steve. That is a awesome image. I like the dialogue between the two elements - mountain and tree, and the soft quality of the light. Great composition indeed, of an anonimous landscape. Cheers. Rafael, Switzerland

Steve,
Interesting juxaposition of the tree and the BG cliffs. The BG looks a little soft to my eye, but still a pleasing. image. Is this a full frame or a crop? Best Regards.

The color palette here looks very natural and not overdone. It makes me feel as if I'm standing there gazing at the alpenglow. Nice work. It would be interesting to see what this would look like with a wider angle lens...which would make the tree more dominant and provide extra separation (I think) between the foreground and background.

Fantastic shot, Steve - wonderful wonderful light and comp, and congrats on the EP! My only nit is the sharpening halos on the branches, which I would mask out.
