My first post to this gallery, but I thought this was the best fit for this image. I'm a research biologist and we have beeen studying the immune system of an endangered species, the Florida Scrub-Jay. The immune system of birds is robust... think of all the injories and diseases wild birds get with no doctors to visit... but even this surprised us. This bird was completely impaled by a twig, straight through the abdomen. Probably no major organs here, but still, a pretty grievous wound. The bird flew normally and did not act like it was ill or injured. The bird is banded and part of our long-term study, so we saw him at least once a month. The twig remained in him for 4-5 months before apparently rotting at both ends and falling off. This picture was taken in October 2007. As of yesterday, April 26 2009, this bird has become a breeder and he and his mate are rearing three young, during an otherwise awful breeding season (drought). An amazing testament to the strength of the avian immune system!

Technicals... Nikon D200, 300mm F4 EDIF, f6.3, 1/400s, handheld

Nice shot, Reed. I'm not sure of the "environmental" aspect of the post, but it IS a fantastic shot and as your story points out a testament to bird's resiliency. I believe a shot like this could be shared in other galleries as well. My hypothesis would be; He survived a tornado.

It's amazing what animals are capable of. What's the reasoning for having 3 bands?

Luke... our banding scheme allows each bird to have a unique combination of color bands and USFWS band. Also the sequence in which we use the bands denotes the individuals age. For example, this birds is silver, blue dash (meaning switch legs) green. That sequence of silver, color, dash, color was applied to all birds born in 2004, thus we know this bird is now 5-years old.

Reed, that's a simple photograph, and in its few elements all delivered in balanced fashion, the twig stands out. Initially I'd thought it was a piece of the same wire the fence is made of. A very effective image made stronger by its mating with a clear and interesting explanation.

Great story and perfect shot to place the emphasis on the impaled bird. Bruce's hypothesis certainly makes sense and is logical. Congrats on the EP!
