to the ends of the earth ...

in the year 2000, i carried out a survey of grevy's zebra across their entire range in northern kenya (except those areas where insecurity was too great - factions fighting over resources). there's a small and remarkable population of grevy's zebras that lives around the chalbi desert. they drink from springs that bubble up on the lava desert/salt flats interface, the water originating from mt marsabit. this is one of the territorial males making his way back across the flats to where there is some grass growing a few kilometers away. this'll be a journey he does every 5 days (unless there's a female in oestrus going across to water in which case he's interested and protective enough to 'guard' her to ensure no other males have their way with her ...). morning light in light dust storm.

thanks for looking (please look at larger file - i think it's better!); comments appreciated. thanks.

pentax s3, 500mm, b&w conversion of velvia.

i see that there's some light falloff with this lens; this should be fairly easily remedied! thanks.

This is awesome, I just love the minimalistic feel of this image. The b&w conversion certainly works here very well and together with the compositon this really does give me that end of the earth feeling, very well done! Love it! :wavey:

Agree with Jorne. Minimalism in this image is splendid! I love it and I am lost for words. Evokes a lot of emotions. Larger image is fantastic. Beautiful image, Stuart. :toast:

Intriguing image Stuart. Like Jorne, I also love the minimalisitic character of this. Also the fact that the zebra is walking away from the viewer, into that wide open space is what makes it so strong. The animal is also perfectly placed in the frame for that matter. Especially the larger version does show some noise, but maybe that is the effect created by the sandstorm. Would love to see this in large print! :toast:

Appropriate composition, love it. And the titile is right on as well because it looks like the zebra is indeed plodding on toward the ends of the earth.

Love this image Stuart. Composition is very interesting for my taste. First I thought a bit of head towards left would add but then it would also give a routine feel. You have a winner here :wavey:

Fabulous! He looks like he's on a long and lonely journey... I could wax philosophical, but I'll let your image do it better. Good idea on the b/w conversion.

Congrats on the EP. :toast:

The B+W is absolutely right for this, and the composition is great. Congrats!
