Pronghorn Buck

The pronghorns are starting to look good, a harbinger of the fall season to come! This guy gave me several moving poses in decent low light. I started to clone the grass stem from in front of his shoulder, but gave it up as too much trouble for not enough gain. Full frame. D 200, iso 125, 200mm, f4.5 @ 1/250.

Good clean image, exposure is spot on. I like best the enlarged version as it shows more detail. Well done :toast:

A very beautiful shot. Love the back ground and the direction of the light.

Great light, Lon, I like the pose and the distant background; I hope I can find a couple of these in September :)

Hi Lon,

Very nice light and a classic pose (and that backdrop isn't half-bad either! ). I have no problem with the grass that you were trying to clone out - I think there's no harm at all at leaving it in.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

A really nice environmental capture Lon. I have really enjoyed seeing wild pronghorns in Kansas & Colorado over the past few years. Were you in the field or shooting out of a car?

Great looking Buck in great looking grassland. Far away hills in shadow add to the mood.

A very pleasing image Lon. Lovely light, good details, nice selective focus and a great backdrop! The grasses crossing its front legs do not bother me a bit. The only OOF grass I do find a bit distracting (but not much) is the one crossing its hind leg. :toast:

The thing I like about this shot is the wonderful setting or backdrop of those rolling forested hills going to the horizon. I like the light and the antelopes pose but it's the setting that really makes it for me. I felt the same way about the buffalo shot but I like this setting even better. Where was this shot. Was it the same place as the buffalo?

Excellent pronghorn image Lon. I like the layers, the light and the dof decision is perfect for my tastes. I live by the cloning tool and it wouldn't have even occurred to me to clone out that grass. It's a really fine looking image IMO.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. Answering a couple of questions: This is in Wind Cave National Park, maybe two miles from where I found the buffalo I posted recently. The pronghorn in Wind Cave are variable in their tolerance of humans up close. For those specifically seeking pronghorn in South Dakota the animals in nearby Custer State Park see more summer visitors, enough to become pretty acclimated, often ignoring your presense and they will sometimes allow close approach on foot by a careful tripod carrying photog. In this case I saw the buck was working his way to catch up to a few individuals some distance away, on the other side of the gravel/dirt back country loop in Wind Cave. I drove to a place between them where the background and light looked favorable and he cooperated by passing by me at reasonably close range and I used a bean bag on the vehicle window. The light was fortunate in that the background hills were experiencing localized rain showers and my subject was facing warm morning light.
