The Perfect Storm

I showed up to photograph this barn about 5:30 a.m. and the storm just showed up with it. I was actually set up in the wrong spot with my 4x5 equipment so I had to run about 100 yards to the right to line up the rainbow. Carrying a metal tripod with lightning going off all around was quite an experience, plus a herd of buffalo that was getting uncomfortably close. Any comments accepted. Thanks.

Not many people can say that they have a unique shot of this barn, but you certainly do now! Awesome shot, Dean.

Perfect timing on this - I'd try a tiny CW rotation on this as it looks like it slants a bit up to the right. The lighting and colors are really impressive

The lighting on the barn is just spectacular, and the rainbow is icing on the cake. Excellent work!

So nice to see a different take on this familiar scene. You brought luck with you on that day. A wonderful capture.

Sweet catch, and you timed it just right for the light. I know what you mean about the lightning, and carrying around the ol' 3 legged lightning rod.

As the others said, nice to have a fresh and new version of this scene. Amazing lighting. Well done.
The dark tree in the middle maybe looks out of place.

Dean: I can relate to the buffalo. I was in this exact spot several years ago engrossed in what I was doing and the herd got between me and my car. Had to take quite a detour. This is a superb capture of a fairly rare event - a morning rainbow - and to get it in such a wonderful setting is extra special. I would actually consider cropping the near line of sage as for me it competes with the atmospherics. The crop also would get your horizon line out of the center of the frame. Marvelous capture of a unique moment. Many kudos and I'm glad you didn't get turned into a crispy critter! >=))>

Thanks again folks for the comments. Bill M. I could try to remove the tree but I'm just not that good, plus I like to preserve the scene as much as possible. Bill F. I have taken this photo and have done exactly what you said and cropped the top and bottom into a pano which people love.

I was shooting in Glacier Park a few years ago using my 4x5 with my head under the hood to focus. It wasn't to far from the road. All of the sudden there were people stopping and hollering while looking in my direction. I thought, what the hec is going on! There was a Grizzly bear right behind me. I got the shot (not of the bear) but didn't stick around to find out what the bear was doing. I just loose track of everything when I' m working a shot.

Wow! the LIGHT! Just fantastic. :toast:

Now, then, a nit: I thought the barn had collapsed… The roof blends into the mountains and all but disappears to my eye. A little tweak on that and presto, a total masterpiece. (It does have a roof, right? )

Wow, what a great bit of light, nice image. Glad you managed to dodge the lightning and the buffalo. Those buffalo can get a bit testy

Stuart, This is one of those instances where you just don't have a chance to look around for a better foreground. The rainbow was fading fast and with a 4x5 its pretty difficult to pick up and move and reset. The buffalo were moving towards me which made the whole thing dicey. I also wanted to make sure I got most of the corral in the picture. Thanks much for your comment.
