Towards the middle of the day I found myself in a town. If you go by population, this was likely the town with the biggest population in Perkins County, SD. It was a prairie dog town. I parked my truck on the edge of it and walked in. The small residents were barking at me furiously, only to disappear down a hole when I approached. I sat down on the shortgrass and had my camera & 200mm lens ready. Soon enough a prairie dog reappeared from a nearby mound. He instantly spotted me and scolded me severely while I took his photo. The land here looks bleak and almost lifeless, but if you are patient and look closely you will see that's not the case. I love the little surprises I get when I visit such desolate places.

Kent, you are so right. The plains offer a lot if one will only stop and really look.

I love prairie dogs and could almost hear them barking at you while I read this. I like the expression you captured on his little face!

I for one have certainly enjoyed seeing the resurgence of prairie dogs in western Kansas and eastern Colorado. It's nice to stop, look & listen every chance we get. Thanks for sharing.
