This coyote was possessive of the remains of a small buck deer, defending it from magpies, another coyote and even trying to pull it away from the reach of my lens. He provided me many poses of feeding and pulling on the carcass, but I really liked the attitude of this one with full eye contack. Look at the detail of the larger version and you will see that the air was full of wind driven snow.

Minor crop. D200, 200-400 @ 400, iso 100, f7.1, 1/125. Your observations and suggestions are appreciated.

Great capture Lon, you're right the eye contact by the coyote really makes the shot. The falling snow is an added bonus. :toast:

Great shot. I like the placement of the coyote and the carcass. The snow on the coyote really adds to the feel.

I'm glad I'm not the only one putting up winter scenes. The bit of grass still coming through the snow gives some definitiion to the land. It's great that you captured him defending away those who might want to share his meal. A fine composition. This would be great as a series depicting coyote survival.

Superb scene and well captured Lon. Agree about the full eye contact here, and the paw on the carcass enforces the possesive stance. Great image! :wavey:

Hi Lon,

While I agree with the others that the eye contact is great, the two things I like most about the image are the almost possessive paw on the carcass and the fine layer of snow on the coyote itself (most easily seen in the larger version of the image). When I look at the larger image the colours on the coyote and the carcass almost look a little too punchy (at least on my monitor), tho' without being there it isn't fair to say it's over-saturated.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

This image really portrays survival in the winter. Like the eye contact and the way the carcass really stands out against the snow.

There is a whole lot to like about this image Lon. The eye contact is terrific, the paw and it seems like he is really enjoying this meal. I have not been lucky in finding coyote's this fall. I saw hundreds over the summer and they seemed to have moved elsewhere. They are one of my favorite animals to photograph, so I am a little jealous!!

An excellent image Lon. The snow really adds to the mood in this cold scene. My only suggestion is to selectively add some blacks on the coyote and the prey just a bit.

Excellent capture - I would have loved to have seen this - the reds look a little like kool-aid, maybe than can be toned down a bit

The original posting was processed with low contrast and some saturation boost, in my attempt to make him come though the haze of falling snow. Here is a repost with the saturation held at exact "normal" according to my camera and with the contrast tweaked to a black point and then a curve applied. I also added a high pass sharpening to this version. Surprising to my eye is that the reds still appear awfully bright against the white background...then again, blood red tends to do that and it is pretty true to life. This particular coyote is a nice contrasty individual. The bitch coyote that attempted to come in on the session that he chased off was really pale and washed out in color by comparison.
