Lioness in Long Grass

This is a shot taken recently in the Kgalagadu Transfrontier Park on the South African side. This lioness and her two cubs had been with a wildebeest kill she had taken three days previously - she had wedged it into the branches of a fallen camel thorn tree and the three of them relaxed there for a few days. I waited most of that time, but she didn't come near enough for any kind of shot.

On the third day, leading up to the site where she lay were the ominous signs of other lions passing through the area. When I arrived this mother was walking around the dead tree in circles, slowly getting larger and larger - the cubs were nowhere to be seen. Every so often she would call and listen, but nothing happened. Eventually she gave up and wandered off over the dunes...

It's a tough world - even for lions!

The shot obviously doesn't tell any of the story, but I thought a little backing track would be nice

Nikon D700
Sigma 50-500mm @500mm
ISO 400

f7.1

Thanks for looking...

What a wonderful and well composed image. The foreground is just great and gives the image a special look. Very well done.

Beautiful image with excellent detail. I particularly like the OOF FG which is so sot and leads the eye right to the Lioness

Such a stately and proud animal. Your presentation emphasizes those characteristics. Love the surrounding environment as well. Stunning image! :toast:

Hi James,

I really like the simplicity of this image. To my eye the band of sharply focused grasses adds a tremendous amount to the image. I have to admit I'm a little bit torn about the mottled lighting on the lioness - the scene is so evenly lit everywhere else that the shadows on the cat appear almost incongruous (especially with no hint of what's producing the shadows). But this is a very small nit and the overall image is very strong and appealing...

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

I really like this James. It is quite interesting how the spotlight seems to be right around the eye, and the foreground does add a lot of mystique to the image. Well composed, beautiful lioness!

Thanks for your comments everyone. The shadows are from a lonely tree that the lioness stood next to. I didn't include the tree in the frame as this simple image was pretty much what I was after - by chance I also quite like the shadows over her body...

I agree that the broken light on the face is the only nit. Nice, clean capture!
