Seriously Cold

Olympus C2500L, Handheld
f3.9, 1/400, ISO400

The blurring in the photo is a combination of ice fog and the effect of extreme cold on 2003-era sensors.

"Ice fog" is frozen water vapor crystals hanging in the air, a fog of ice crystals instead of water droplets. It's a very serious hazard at extremely cold temperatures in the inversion-prone Fairbanks area. The photo was taken at exactly 12:00 noon.

Jim: Makes me glad I live in the sun belt! I'm surprised the camera would even function in these conditions. Brrrrrr! >=))>

Very impressive. I spent a few days in Fairbanks in July. What a difference!

When I was a teenager I lived in Iowa and some days schools would be closed in the winter because it was too cold for kids to walk to school. And I thought that was cold! Man, I never want to feel -49 cold. Terrific sign photo Jim. Makes me shiver.

Jim, this is real cold. How to survive? -49F is -45C; where I live now the temperature is never lover (day & night) than +73F (+23C). I like the image camouflaged by ice fog.

Miro, the critical thing to remember is that you can always put more clothes (insulation) on, but there is a limit to how many you can take off.

Great theme entry, Jim--although this a repeat, and i was kind of hoping you'd top this with a new post of -50 degrees
I hope it gets that cold here in CO this winter--might kill off some of the stinkin pine beetles!

My dad was in the area during WWII, so I've heard many a story of the weather/temps there. Amazing that they could accomplish what they did (built airfields in Gulcanna and Big Delta). I think I'll pass!

Congrats on the EP.
