A Story in Stone

There are a lot of little scenes like this in the Virgin Narrows of Zion, but this one seemed to come together particularly well. I really like the combination of surreal shape, texture, color and dramatic light. The lone tree clinging to life in an eroded alcove added the perfect counterpoint and scale. I missed this scene on my in, but found it coming back out thanks to two other photographers who were standing with cameras pointed toward the upper reaches of the canyon.

As I experienced the scene I was taken by the contrast between the red rock and the cooler shadows and varnish stripes which were reflecting blue light. However, I found that in post I could not find a single white balance setting that properly showed both the warm tones and cool tones the way that I experienced them. I decided to double process the RAW file, one with a warmer WB and one with a cooler WB and then blend the two images to better recreate my experience of the scene. I also found Tony's luminosity masking very helpful in controlling highlights and bringing out shadow detail.

I'm loving this Sean! The varied tones and colors of the wall are so pleasing, and the bush provides a great added element.

This is exquisite in its simplicity yet powerful in its texture and tones.
I really like the way the tree stands out.
Great job also with the double processing.

This is a stunning image and wonderful composition. You've handled the light beautifully here. The slight underexposure conveys the feel of being this this canyon very well. However, I personally would like to see a version without the blend. I find the blues a bit too strong here, and although I can appreciate your desire to show both the warm and cool tones you saw, the blend looks a bit unnatural. Perhaps finding the optimum WB setting for both and then individually tweaking the reds and blues might yield a more seamless result?

Sean, this is really nice. I did the Narrows myself last week and missed this. It's all about the light and timing.

All of these Zion pictures lately are making me jealous! I'd love to spend a few weeks roaming around in such a beautiful place!

I must say this is one of the better images I've seen from here. The tree makes it here, yet the BG is interesting enough I think it'd do well on its own! :toast:

I love this one. Certainly a story-telling shot of the tenacity of life. I think the blend works well contrasting the cool varnish and the warm rock. I wouldn't mind seeing the leaves just a little darker or more saturated, but otherwise this image is fantastic!

Sean, this really is a special image. I like the way you processed the image, as I think it accurately conveys the feeling of standing in the Narrows and experiencing a scene like this.

I love this Sean. Very nice work. The comp comes alive with the combination of the stationary tree, and the curves, ridges, and light in/on the rock. Yellow with blue in the rock. Light, and dark in the shadows. I would be very happy with this one.

Extremely well seen, captured and processed! I'm looking at this on my notebook computer monitor, so my perception may not be entirely accurate (especially since no one else has mentioned this in their comments), but the ULHC seems to me like it would benefit from a slight shadows adjustment.

Even in the wider views of my original visit to the Narrows, I felt that the small trees tucked into the cliffs made for some of the most compelling elements of my photos. Under the circumstances, I wouldn't have thought to isolate a scene like this, but in the years since, I've wished for a chance to make just this type of image. Your rendition is splendid, with all your efforts to match the photo to your impressions of the place.

Great find and great processing - I like the way you processed - so natural, but captures your experience. Did you also try composing with a bit zoomed in and making the tree a bigger part of the space?

Freakin' great stuff Sean. Love the idea of double processing for the white balance. Great spot, comp. lighting...all. Could be my monitor but might be ok for just a tad levels bump for the whites in the red rock. Awesome catch

The colour contrasts of the orange, black, and brilliant yellow captivate initially, but, the stupendous variety of textures – from the rough stone surfaces, to the smooth undulating scalloped walls, to the leaves of the tree – are what keep me involved and engaged in the image.

This is truly one of the best images from Zion I've ever seen. I can only imagine its effect in print and at a somewhat larger size.
