Desert Big Horn Ram

Image created during a recent trip to Utah. Fortunate to find a small band of rams and ewes. Amazing the terrain these animals can traverse.

D300S, f/4 @ 500 mm VR, 1/400, ISO 400, handheld, 1/400th sec.

General impressions of the image appreciated.

I like the active pose with the raised foot. In this instance I think the vegetation adds to the scene and give a sense of place. Details are difficult to determine with an image of this size.

I like the sense of environment here. My only nit is that the ram's face seems to blend in with the BG at the edge.
Very cool shot though! :toast:

I like the inclusion of the habitat Larry and find the rocks add interest to the image. What does detract from my appreciation of this is the FG bush that obstructs the ram's body.
Just FYI it is possble to post larger images on NPN, 720 px with an additional option for a 1200 px version. I can understand not everyone wishes to post a 1200 px version, but I would sure recommend to post at least 720 px images. The larger the image, the better people can critique them

Thanks for the comments Rick and Vincent. Seems like when shooting animals in their natural environment there is always something in the background or foreground? I know I would not like to have to walk where the big horns walk. :-)

Hello Larry,
I would echo the request for a larger post.
Looks like your technique is solid for hand holding this shot.
IMO the lighting is a bit cold and could tolerate some warming.
Nice shot.

I like the nice action pose. I agree that a bit of warming might be an enhancement...and possibly (protecting the whites) a bit more contrast. The red rock setting is a plus.

Thanks for comments/suggestions. I attempted to get the ram as close in color as I remembered. When I added some saturation the red rocks just seemed to overwhelm the ram. I do have a few more I can work on once I get caught up with all the images we created on our 15 day trip.

Great action capture, nice details and tones Larry.
I especially like this setting showing the rugged terrain these animals live in.
Well done :toast:

Thanks Howard. It was quite a thrill to find a small herd of desert big horns to photograph while on our trip.
