Last of the night images for a whle....figured I'd give you all a break! I have been experimenting with night images on film for 15 years with varying degrees of success. Star trail images were fine but I failed miserably at the star points. Taken in Feb. 08' after I got the Mark III in Dec. I plannded this trip specifically to see how well it did with the night images...needless to say I wasn't disappointed. ISO 6400 for 30 seconds at f4.5 for 30 seconds. Delicate Arch painted with flashlight. Noise reduction run on sky only in PP'ing
PS Moab city lights on horizon behind the arch.

Amazing! Not what I expected from the thumbnail. Not a step out of place, but the light on the arch is a bit weird. I love it anyway! Well done! :toast: :toast:

This is gorgeous Roman - One of the finest light panited images I've seen.

wow, this is awesome - very nice work. I minor nit, but I think it looks better cropping out a third of the snow, which takes out a bit of the awkwardness in the comp of dropping off into darkness on the right

Wasn't sure what to expect from the thumb. This is pretty neat. Sure a lot of stars.

I would have liked to see the light coming from more of an angle on this one. With the light coming from near the camera, it doesn't show the relief of the arch. I've also seen people use an orange gel for their light painting. That way they can convert the RAW image with a cooler white balance. The arch would have normal color, and the background would be more bluish in color, which is often times more interesting from a visual standpoint.

I think your composition works pretty well because of the emphasis on the arch. One thing that draws my attention away from the arch and the sky is the square of dark land that is inside the arch. The black box diverts my attention from the rest of the composition because it is such a strong shape.

I basically agree with Ben here. I applaud the creativity and effort, but the shot doesnt evoke a strong emotional reaction from me, which it should. One problem is the WB, as Ben mentioned. The other is the comp is too cramped--this shot should be all about the grand arch in the context of the huge universe, but here it looks small and confined because theres no context. Basically, if you're gonna use technology to do something different, then i feel its counterproductive to compose a shot which is basically the same ol' DA shot, only with stars. Just my take. :wavey:

Very nice! Such a beautiful combination of elements with the red rock, the white snow the star filled sky- this is a beauty.
