Sanderling

I was always very envious of photos of Waders on nice sandy beaches. Mia's - then Lia - Florida shorebirds come to mind! Here in Vancouver, they are either on rocks, in dirty muck at the sewage ponds (low angles not advisable), or out on the muddy marshes which are generally "out-of-bounds".

Well, I accidentally (looking for something else) found a small flock of these Sanderlings two mornings ago at a sandy beach at a local public park. There was one short moment when I was lying on the sand that was magical, when they were all around me foraging, well inside minimum focus.

5D2, 500mm +1.4X, 1/1250 @ f8, ISO800, early morning soft light, tripod at lowest possible.

Thanks for looking.

The shallow dof combined with the perfect side profile view of this closeup is a nice composition. Nice exposure. Shorebirds are quite foreign to where I live, nice to be able to experience them vicariously here though.

Very nice KC. I like the angled sand substrate the bird is on. It adds interest. I also like the little trails in the sand a bird made while foraging. Great exposure and super detail in the bird.

An absolute beauty KC. I like the pose, excellent detail, your DOF and your exposure looks just right. The relative tightness of the bird works esp well with this pose I think.

KC,

I'm very glad you got to experience that magical feeling of the shorebirds surrounding you, it always delighted me that the birds could be so accepting of my presence that they just went about their business when I laid on the sand.

I love the intimacy of your crop, how the bird appears to be puffed up in the cool air, the pose and the open bill. Beautiful details, sharpness and soft natural colors.

An outstanding sanderling photo as presented.

Isn't that a wonderful moment when the birds are ignoring you and you can just shoot away. Beautiful capture, nice low angle with the open beak just ready to grab some food.

I love photographing these birds. At first they look a little drab, but the texture of the feathers is so nice, as your image illustrates so well.
