Bohemian Waxwing

This was taken at Musselburgh, near to Edinburgh in Lothian, Scotland. The bird was part of a large flock and was sitting on top of the tree and suddenly took off. I waited for some time before it moved off and I could get the shot

I managed to catch it showing the markings on the wing feathers against a fine blue sky.

Ron, this is really nice. I like the comp wit the nice perch branches and their colors. The blue sky is a great BG for this image. The position you caught the bird in is very nice and the sharpness is good. I too like the look the viewer gets of the wing markings. Well done.

The colors and the flared wings are great - as is the positioning of the bird. But, I'm wondering why there is virtually no detail in the birds feathers at all - looks like a heavy noise reduction was done - but the perch is sharp and full of detail, so I'm a bit confused. . .

Ron, Nice job catching the moment of takeoff. The colors and composition are great, this shot was worth waiting for. :toast:

Luke, from my experience, these birds have very smooth feathers, which would be hard to show detail in a photograph. Noise reduction could also play a part. (Or maybe I'm way off base? )

The exif indicates the ISO was actually at 500 not 200 - so noise reduction is a good possibility. Also, I understand the feathers are quite fine, but if you look at other Cedar Waxwing photos on this site, almost all of them are loaded with detail (granted they aren't in flight, but still)

Ron,

This is a wonderful shot. The colors in this little guy are striking and to catch it at the moment of liftoff against that brilliant blue sky. Great job.

Amazing! Some of the best detail I have seen in the wings ever. Great lift-off pose too you achieved, well done.

a very nicely captured flight shot--nice job capturing the moment of takeoff. I do agree with Luke that the bird looks overly "smooth" and without detail. I'm not very familiar with waxwings, but I'd think even very fine plumage would show more detail?

This one really shows off the waxy appearance of those feathers. I'm surprised there is still a hint of motion in the wings at 1/3000. Some really punchy colors in the bird and sky, very attractive. :toast:

A very unique capture that shows off the birds plumage in all his glory.
Looks like you had some pretty harsh light to contend with there.

Ron - superb take-off posture with the light to exploit the situation (1/3000 for frozen action). The waxwings are difficult to get good plumage detail but there seems to be less of it than usual here, even given the motion. I did a search for the species on NPN and came up with five other images, all of which show significantly more detail than I see here so I too am curious about the possible effects of any NR that may have been done. Then again, it may have been just the bright light on fine plumage.

Beautiful pose you captured here. I didn't realise you get these Waxwings in Scotland, but I do know there are two very old and great golf courses there!

I've never seen a Bohemian and did not fully appreciate the difference in markings (compared to Cedar) until I saw this shot. Neat capture.
