grizz play

I was without my 80-400mm lens when some of the best bear behavior was happening in Grand Teton National Park in spring 2008, so I had to shoot with my 105,, f2.8. from about 100 yards away, but with tripod.
These are two of three cubs whose mother is bear No. 399.
Fun to imagine the one on the right just played a prank on the other, and the one on the left is not amused.

I like the interaction and the expression on the right side cub. Neat that you caught those already-long claws. I think the comp would have been a bit stronger if the bears were slightly to the left in the frame.

What a super opportunity. I like the feel of the warm spring rays softening up the snow, it appears the bears are enjoying the situation as well. Compositionally, I also would prefer the bears a bit further to the left. Nice job! :toast:

Hi Roger,

Good job on the exposure on a really high-contrast scene - I think the amount of shadow detail (and highlight detail for that matter) is just about optimal. Good timing as well - looks to me like you triggered the shutter at JUST the right time - love the expression of the bear on the right...

I think I'm in agreement with Lon about the positioning of the bears in the frame, i.e., I think the image would be just a little stronger with a minor shift of the subjects to the left.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Another vote for the slight composition change. Nice action you captured here. Highlights near the lrc look a bit hot though.

You know all the bears down there by number?
