Sandstone Circles

These are from Glen Canyon Recreation Area just outside Page, Ar. Varina pointed them out to us and I took some different shots of them. I knew they would probably be strongest as a set or grouped with other abstracts, and was happy that these 3 seemed to go together.

I have titled the Left one "Orbit" but stuck on the other two. And yes Tony's triptych timing is coincidence. I figured since it was well received I would put this up.

Thanks as always for the comments and critiques, I always think about what you guys say.

Would also love any explanations for them, as I had a tough time with google. All I got were patterns to make sandstone circles in your driveway.

Dominos!

Fantastic tryptich Paul. It really does have colorful dominoe feel to it.

Cool set, Paul. Going solo, these probably wouldn't do a lot for me, but presented together, it makes for an excellent triptych.

The fact that the circles are so perfect is very interesting, and wonder how they were created as well. My guess is that they are the result of where Tony set his beer bottles; kind of like the ring left when somebody doesn't use a beverage coaster on your coffee table. I dunno.

Very nice! These would do quite well on canvas.

Thanks guys,

Steve, you're right, dominoes, especially the center one.

I'm hoping Tony has the answer.

Ben that was the exact thing I thought. Real big.

This works well a a triptych Paul. Interesting formations. I'll have to check back to see if anyone has an answer on how they formed.

Looks like microscopic slides! Interesting study. I like the rightmost two images but I am not sure the leftmost one is up to par with the other two imho.

Very cool arrangement Paul,

I think this from Tony leaving his pint of rainbow sherbet ice cream while shooting his comps
Seriously nice find though. Most of the time I believe oxides leech from the rock over long periods of time causing interesting striations and formations. Im sure Tony will pick up on this.
Great job

Great eye for detail, Paul. I like all 3 of them. I'll leave the geology to someone more qualified.

Oooo, I love this, and know where there are some really good ones. The triptych is great . . . mind if I borrow this idea sometime for some more circles sometime from somewhere else?

It's my understanding from talking to Dr. Steve Weaver that these spots are areas where the oxide pigments that color the sandstone red have been reduced making them more soluble, and thus more likely to be leached out of the rock leaving a non-pigmented area. Why it's a circle, I have no idea. And I'm not geologist, so there may be others who can provide a more accurate explanation of what's going on.

Magnifico!
The spots are well balanced and well synchronized...perfect for this sort of presentation.
My favorite (so far) of your work from this area!

I see something else, the 3rd one is a mountain landscape with a giant moon with ET inside of it.

I ate too much pizza yesterday at my God son's b-day party.

Great find, Paul! I'll add to the opinions of the others that this would be really wonderful on canvas. Well done.

Wow, what a gorgeous grouping of images! The two on the right can stand well on their own, but as a group of 3, I'm awe inspired. I feel kind of humble and small, so I'll venture to name names.

#2- Pax de Deux; #3- Staying Power. For the group: Eternal Circle.

If that's natural I'm most impressed. That looks so weird. The triptych works very well for me - I like the left one most for its simplicity.
