This pronghorn buck in Custer State Park, SD displays the new horns which are already beginning to grow after the outer sheath of last year's growth was discarded in November. He seems unaffected by the snow which is shown off somewhat by being superimposed against the darker tones of a Pondorosa pine forest.

D200, 70-200 @ 140, ISO 200, 1/2000 @ F/2.8, matrix +1.0ev. C&C welcomed.

Lon, great photo. I wouldn't change a thing. I have not seen a wild pronghorn in years, really enjoy photos of them.

Cool image! I really like the pose, snow, and environment. The buck himself seems a bit soft from here - maybe some additional edge sharpening would help? or maybe it is just the falling snow..

I'm really loving all the winter images lately, maybe because I am enjoying them from sunny South Florida. =) I really like this, the mood and falling snow and stark feeling, with a hint of forest. :toast:

Hi Lon,

I really the mood here - and another really strong image of an animal "enduring" the winter conditions. Although it's subtle, I quite like how the snowflakes in the background are partially obscuring the pines. And, even tho' the colours of the antelope aren't overly vibrant, they stand out very nicely in this near mono-chromatic scene. About the only suggestion I can make about the image is this: if it were mine I might experiment with cropping a very small amount off the bottom (thus slightly lowering the antelope in the frame).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

Cheers...

The falling snow really makes this image wonderful. Shows the harsh env very well.

Lon,
Nice environmental portrait. The larger version must be seen to appreciate the snow superimposed against the ponderosa. It's tough to capture the eyes just right with these guys, but in this, his eye is sharp and I even think I see a bit of catch light. Or maybe that's a snowflake.

Fine looking animal, pretty against the snow bg. The fact that we see falling snow makes it even better as an evirnmental image. Nice job all around.

Like the bison this one makes me shiver. Good job of conveying the cold there. Love the snow in the air but now I am moving on to the next WARMER image.
