A light in the darkness
by Morris McClung
I don't think this is my best shot of 2009, but it does speak to the part of this challenge of what nature photography means to me. I had not been able to get away for my usual fall photo safari I take in Colorado. I was disappointed to say the least. I took my wife on a short trip up into the foothills west of Denver for a small fall journey instead. It was overcast and clearing from an earlier rain. The light was wonderful and the smaller subjects announced themselves as ready for my attention. I came across this maple at dusk and it was fairly glowing in the late evening light. As I photographed this tree it occurred to me how nature's beauty is not very far away from us and ready for us when we look for it. I am grateful now for the opportunity I had to try to capture a portion of our beautiful world.

7 commentsI also agree with you about the opportunities we're afforded close at hand.

Well done!
And I can certainly agree with what you say Morris; I do most of my shooting very close to home. There's also a benefit to that; you learn to know all the right places and you can return to them many times, so that you get the best out of them all.
