Insidious Beauty

There is a strange attraction of winter being both beautiful and dangerous. As I made my way up this flooded canyon creek many obstacles await. Cold pools of unknown depth, dangling icicles four feet in length, and iced over sandstone beneath your feet.
The trouble is worth it though. My B+w style of Lake falls in a much wider view. Maintaining a sense of balance in the comp was tricky but I think it turned out ok.

Thanks again for all your time and comments

Processing: Bw conversion, delicate dodging/burning and Tony's lum masks were essential here.

This works really well form me. Tonality is excellent. The light branches top of the image are super. Great image.

It may have been tricky, but I think the composition you went with looks great. The shutter speed is also spot on. Excellent work. I think I'd prefer it as a pure B&W without the blue tint, but that's a highly personal preference.

You didn't mention it, but did you fog up the lens or apply a bit of an Orton effect or something along those lines? Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me, but it just seems to me that there's a bit of that Orton-esque feeling. Either way, it doesn't really influence my overall opinion one way or the other.

I've never seen a single ice/waterfall composition that worked out better than either of these. Ice/water combos are usually very frustrating for photographers and don't usually work nearly as well as we observe with our eyes because of the similar exposure, luminosity, etc. between ice and water. You've done a marvelous job arranging the ice against darker areas here and avoiding distractions. Definitiely it looks like there's a lot of diffusion applied here but it works for me.

Jeepers, the wider view is as good as the close-up was. This is very beautiful and perfectly balanced.

Thanks everyone,
First off, I don't have as much experience as some of you in comp, light mastering, and well 95% of things photographically. What I do know is that it was a magical scene and like most scenarios, was better viewing in person. As Marc stated, the light and luminosity of such scenes are tricky. Natural eyes view the bright snow, water and ice. Shadows are not as deep because our eyes of course are broader dynamically.
Translating what I saw into the camera is, well downgrading. Processing was tricky but keeping the snow and ice a correct luminosity was essential. I deepened some shadows to highlight those elements and kept the balance of light and dark stable.
I did use areas of diffusion as a form of softening when I sharpen. I often will over sharpen and this keeps it looking right for me. I must admit this version looks a little to soft than my finished web product in ps. Tricky these web files are. The diffusion also created a little mood as well here.

Thanks again for your valuable input and if there's anything else dont hestitate.......

This is really wonderful. I recognize the diagonal log with the icicles from your earlier post and thought it couldn't get better-but I was wrong. Congratulations on an excellent image.

The diffusion works very well for me also. The comp is grand and the conversion is well done. I'm sure you have details in the brightest of the whites in a print, but hard to see it here. Typical of a small presentation on the web. I would lose the small intruder in the urc. Another stunning shot from you.

another fine image, vicent. remember quite well you´re previous post, in fact, it made me go back and see how and where you made your framing. then I returned to this version to see the place as you took this one wider, it´s quite unique for me, because we don´t have these winter scenes around these parts. no nits for me at all, this image speaks for it´s self, fabulous. I do prefer the lower half though but it would look a bit like you´re last so this one is a winner as is, imo. great comp.

This is stunning. I agree about the shutter speed being spot on. I like the tree with the curtian of ice accross the stream, it pulls the eye

Very nice. There is a deep eery glow on it. It looks like a ghost place that does not exist in reality. Very well done.

I think you nailed the comp and processing. I really like this one. I have to say that it doesn't strike me as "insidious," but I take it that's a reference to your hike up to this location.

Another awesome shot of this waterfall. I think you're processing skill looks very good here. Has a very nice 3-d look because of the separation between trees and waterfall, and and a great mood. A real beauty Anthony.
