It’s All About the Light

Well ... maybe not all about the light.

As is to be generally expected, the lighting conditions throughout east Zion are conducive to photography predominantly in the early morning and late afternoon. However, there are some small areas scattered around which remain in the shadows all or most of the day at this time of year. And a few of these small shadowed areas are fortunate for whatever reasons (probably mostly due simply to the lay of the surrounding landscape) to be bathed seemingly from every direction in beautiful reflected light of unusual quality even for Zion and especially for east Zion. This image was captured in one such area up in east Zion, a short distance past the tunnel not too far from the road, on a clear and sunny 1st day of November last year, at 11:50 AM. I was attempting primarily to create an intimate landscape composition that would be considered atypical for east Zion and to effectively portray the quality of the light.

A scene like this is really though to pull off, but I like the way you have brought all of the elements together. The variety of wonderful colors looks great to me.

You are right about the great light but the colors are pretty fantastic as well. I really like the red, green, and yellow leaves.

Yeah, canyon light is some of the best. Like big red reflectors everywhere. I love the details here.

Nicely done, Jim. The colors really pop off the screen here, and I like that. Splendid comp to hang these colors on.

Great color . . . looks like some potential for good close-up shots of the canyon floor as well. The tree trunk is a tad too dominant for me, but that's just a personal preference.

The lighting is very nice, it almost has a sort of fill flash feel to it. Fantastic color Jim!

Wouldn't have thought this was east Zion. Looks like something on the west. The saturation on the tree is a bit too much for me. The composition is intriguing--it's difficult to tell the steepness and direction of the slope.

A very nice mix of colors here, Jim. I like the rock outcrop in the bg too. Well done.

Beautiful color and detail Jim. And great composition, although the perspective seems a bit different to me in that the tree base seems somewhat narrower than that at the top of the frame, perhaps due to the use of the wide angle lens. Or that is simply what was there. Regardless, a beautiful intimate landscape.
