A Winter's Touch

Thank you very much for the comments on the b&w attempt. I value and appreciate the feedback.

Here is the first image from the short Christmas trip Jimmy G. and I took to Yosemite. Although the weather reports only called for a 30% chance of snow, I knew the conditions were favorable... As we dropped out of Mariposa some 30 miles from the valley, the temp hovering around 40... way too warm for snow. I quickly figured out Jimmy's eyes were on outside temperature guage on my car dashboard. 39, 38, 37... as we got closer and closer to the valley. 36, 35, 34... it was lightly raining. Then just a couple miles from the entrance to Yosemite Valley, it began to snow... 32. It started snowing more, the snow got heavier... we had to stop.

Nearly impossible to pick up the snow in this web version so please view the larger version as the snow becomes more visible.

For me, this has a painterly look, almost a colored pencil sketch than a painting... yet the detail beyond the large version is amazing!

As always, your honest feedback and critique are appreciated.

Thanks!

Lon

Very cool! Totally love it. Not really a critique, cause its a cool effect, but the snow looks more like rain here. I guess it was very wet snow

Wow. It was really coming down. I could look forever here and never be able to find a comp in this chaos. Nicely done. There is a level of order here that makes the chaos feel subdued. Very nice light, as ususal.

Well, I'm not sure if I'm totally over you "steppin out" with that "other guy" But I think this is fantastic!!! The snow does look kind of like rain due to the amount or velocity of it. It looks like it's coming down very hard/fast. It's a beautiful shot full of nuances, and details. If I had a nit/wish, it would be that you were able to wait just a little longer. Then the snow would have been able to accumulate on the evergreens, and mostly the main bare tree. I think if the branches of that tree were highlighted with a heavier dusting of snow, WOW!!!! But I'm liking this a whole lot, just the way it is.

Beautiful image, Lon! The detail is wonderful to study and I like the hint of cool blue setting the mood for the wintry scene.

Lon,

The veiling effect of the snow is mysterious and appealing to me in this low-contrast image.

This morning was in the low thirties with reports of snow flurries on Miami Beach and ice in many peoples back yards, and I had to sit out in an art show. This is a much better way to enjoy the cold, but with recent events, I can very much feel being there. Just a beautiful view to sit back and enjoy Lon. I stared at the large version for a nice long while. :toast:

Hi Lon :wavey: You really captured the winter mood here. The receding blue tones and light are marvelous. Again superb detail.

This is outstanding. The driving snow and lightly accented trees and foliage look beautiful. I'll also add that your sharpening for the web is perfect.

Beautiful driving snow scene. Nicely balanced, well composed. I might like to see a bit more of the foreground red trees though.

Yes, very painterly Lon, lovely detail of some cold and wet snowy conditions. The warmer tones at the bottom provide an important contrast that really completes the scene.

I like this a lot. You have captured the peacefulness of a gentle snowfall. I enjoy the layers of muted color and the varying tonalities.

I love this Lon. Fantastic winter scene but I have to say those amber trees at the bottom really make this wonderful and anchor the scene overall.

Thanks for the comments folks! One thing is for sure, we all share that common bond of understanding and knowing the feeling of being there and witnessing these joys of nature!

"your sharpening for the web is perfect. " Daniel E. - thanks for noticing. Great time to plug Tony Kuyper's masks and actions. Most know about his luminosity and saturation masks/actions, but I've been using his web sharpening techniques for a while now and love them. I continue to highly recommend all of them. And no, I don't get a kick back... :-)

Daniel R., Eva and Floris - Glad you noticed the layering and trees at the bottom. I too wish there was more of them at the bottom, but alas, it's pretty much which snow along the banks of the Merced and I didn't want to include a bunch of snow. But those trees at the bottom were a major reason that this scene caught our eyes.

And for you Chris, a little test... to see if you return to this thread and read my response...
The next time the conditions look like snow in the Valley, I'll probably be heading up again... and if you want to join me, just give me a holler.. we can make a day of it.

Thanks!

Excellent, Lon. It doesn't get any better. You've skillfully mastered all the elements in here. Thank god there's a larger version here too - the small one is really sad.

This looks far more impressive as a large image than the smaller 720 pixel one so I'm glad I opened itup. The description of a coloured pencil etching is very apt and I like the appearance and mood conveyed. Excellent shot.

Great shot, Lon. I love the color, and wow.. that snow is sure coming down! The soft pinks and purples against a backdrop of blue makes this image attractive to me. The touch of orange/red in the fg is the icing that makes this a beautiful composition of color. The level of detail is beautiful also.

Hi Lon,

This is very nice. I specially love how dense and detail rich the entire scene is. The heavy snowfall provides a strong unifying touch.

I love the painterly feel to the image Lon. The foreground trees really give a nice contrast to the image. I do wish the snow was more "frozen" to appear less like streaky, but then unless the flakes were huge, it would be tough to see I'm sure. Gorgeous work!

Splendid, strong picture! The large version is outstanding, and I can only imagine what the full resolution must look like... And the treatment for the web is really good. But didn't your folding get overly wet and snowy when you took the picture ?!.... Auch...

I did not see this before! This is lovely Lon. I like that little touch of yellow given by the trees at the bottom, and the aerial perspective given by the mist. There is a lot of winter spirit there, and a zen spirit very deep... I love it.
