Surprise

Years ago, I decided to photograph Great Sand Dunes at dawn and arrived about 4 a.m. to try and catch an early shot near the top of the highest dunes. I never had hiked up those dunes because I would usually head downrange to try to find dunes less traveled.

This morning, as I neared the top, all of a sudden, a bank of fog started coming up the valley. Before it was all over, the fog had completely encircled all of the dunes and I had to stop shooting.

It happened so quickly, I couldn't get my 4x5 set up in time, and just shot with my Nikon. This was perhaps my 2nd photo trip with my 4x5 and I didn't want to risk getting the shot.

Nice image, Michael. I love this time of day, especially when I've got a cuppa joe. Processing seems incomplete, but that's not unusual for your NPN posts

Simple and very effective composition with just enough elements to hold my interest while still allowing the feeling of vast open space. I like the deep pre-sunrise hues.

The bands of color here are beautiful, Michael. I was only to the Great Sand Dunes
once. After seeing this, I must return.

The softness in colors and textures is nice here. It's very pleasing to look at.
