Forest Symphony

Over winter break, I had the opportunity to explore some beautiful Redwood forests. Away from work and school, I was able to wake up and dedicate an entire day to walking amongst these giants. I did this for almost a week. Familiarizing yourself with an area you wish to shoot really helps in the photographic process. Depending on the amount of fog/rain, I could cut through the forest to locations I had specifically remembered. This image was captured during a very wet morning. The fog was thick above my head and the vegetation moist. Quite possibly my favorite shooting conditions. This tree immediately caught my attention. The variegated leaves along with their graceful arrangement told a story of fall. I especially enjoy letting my eyes ease out of focus, and watching the leaves turn to bright beacons of color in the darker forest.

I really like this shot for the reasons you describe near the end of your introduction to the post. In my experience, it's hard to get the right conditions (i.e., no breeze) to shoot a scene like this. Looks like it all came together nicely for you here.

Very delicate composition. The vertical trunk on the right 1/3 breaks the composition a bit, but nevertheless it's a nice image.

Absolutely love how the FG leaves stand out in such high contrast from the background foliage. The colors, composition...everything about this one is awesome, Benjamin.

Very nice image Ben. I like how the brighter leaves seem to float against the darker background. Neat mix of yellows and greens in those lighter leaves too.

I never would have thought to shoot a tree that has largely lost most of its leaves, but I really enjoy the way the sporadic leaves stand out against the darker canopy in the bg. Well seen and captured!

The leaves are almost jewel-like among the darkness of the surrounding trees. I actually like the top of the image a bit more as it has more leaves.
