I shot this yesterday afternoon. This buck gave me many good shots, but I thought that this one was special. Special what I am not sure of. This was the first day with no rain in four days so I was glad to be out!

Hope that you enjoy my picture and please comment. That is the way I learn.

Hi Jack,

Yep, no doubt that buck sees you! While I'm not normally a fan of dead-centre compositions, I think the head-on stare here justifies the centred positioning of the buck. Two suggestions of things you could have done a little differently here that may have helped strengthen this image. First, I think the positioning and lines of the subject suggest a vertical composition as opposed to a horizontal one. The current orientation produces excess "wasted" space on either side of the image that contributes very little to the image. Second, in this case you didn't need a lot of depth of field, so I think opening up the aperture more (possibly even wide open) would have helped throw that background out of focus more and isolated the subject better (making it stand out more).

Otherwise, techs look good here (exposure pretty much dead-on, etc.).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

Hi Jack, that sure is a special or let me say interesting pose and sure beter than seeing only its backside! Regarding the composition I echoe Brad's comments here. You say this is a 30% crop, do you mean that this image is 30% of the original file or 70% of the original file? I presume the latter as 30% would not leave many pixels to make a decent print with.

I like the pose here and agree that shooting with a wider aperture would improve this image.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I am posting a verticle crop, and you are right. The verticle crop centers your attention on the deer. Much more powerful. The original picture had 70% of the original shot in it. I cropped a little from around the total picture. Thanks!!!

I like the vertical crop better as well. Pretty nice rack on this guy.

A nice looking buck Jack. Almost looks like it is time for you to move! I like the vert crop too.

Hi Jack, did you consider a vertical cut? IMO it could have given more strength to an al ready very good shot.
