Running elk calf

This elk calf emerged from the Madison river and raced to catch up with momma trailing a stream of water behind.

This is a large crop using less than half of the frame. Shot with a D70 300/2.8 TC 14 and monopod.

Hi Robert,

That's definitely a unique look at a young elk. I quite like how the water is streaming off the elk, particularly in the neck region. In a perfect world it would have been nice if the elk's head was oriented slightly more toward you (or at least broad-side), but not much you could do about that. Given this is a large crop, I'm wondering if positioning the elk slightly more to the left (and out of dead-centre) would slightly strengthen the image). I realize this would mean that a few water droplets would be lost, but I'm thinking the trade-off might be worth it?

Cheers...thanks for sharing this.

Brad

PS: What was your shutter speed here? Just curious...

Hello Brad,

Thanks for the comment and feedback. The shutter speed was 125th sec. aperture unknown but I'm pretty sure it was 2.8 (f4 with the TC).

I like the water streaming from this calf. My wish would be for her to give you a slightly different angle or turn body or head a little bit towards you. Elk are terrible at taking directions, aren't they!
