Eye Of The Leopard
by kiran khanzode
To capture the 'Big Five', usually the Leopard and Rhino are the biggest hurdles. Not this time, I got them with cubs/calves.
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, Feb 2010.
EOS 7D, 300mm, ISO 400, handheld, FF(almost).

25 commentsI love how similar the leopard and tree coloring are - perfect camoflage.
The BG is perfect here. the only possible nit is that I personally would remove the partial lower branch, leaving only the top one.

A compelling shot! For me the thing that's most interesting about this is how the leopard blends with the tree and almost appears to be "growing" out of (or emerging from) it. I like the composition but am left wondering about how it would look with slightly less room on top (and slightly more on the bottom). I'm torn a little about the thorns below - see both sides of the "distraction' vs. "framing" effect...
But overall this is a very visually appealing and compelling shot as posted...
Cheers...

Stuart, thanks for the views about the thorns (presenting both sides).
Jack, Jagdeep, thanks a lot !
Brad, thanks for the very detailed feedback. I agree the animals literally looks like an extension of the tree. I could have added more space on the bottom (had some), but then the thorny bush would have taken some attention away from the Leopard, imo. Had it been an empty LLC, I would have definitely cropped it just like how you mentioned.
Lon, thanks for the fantastic insight about the thorns and the message they convey !!
Sally, thank you for your feedback !
Robert, I am SO happy that my image could bring out those memories from the 80s (I just checked out the video on YouTube). Thanks for the analogy.
Darren, thanks a LOT ! I have been chasing Leopards for a long time, finally got a session where I could compose and shoot at leisure(somewhat) :-).
Dan, Thanks for your comment and feedback !
Luca, Thanks, I agree, if the BLC was clean, then it would look as if the Leopard is at a very high position (and drive the user's imagination) ready to pounce...agreed !
Nick, Ken, Patricia, Mark, Thanks !!
This is absolutely puuurfffect in my opinion. The composition of this photo really can't be beat for a Leopard shot. It looks like the cat is about to drop out of the tree on some hapless Impala. I would vote on the side of keeping the thorns in the shot b/c that's what was there and I like the framing effect. Thanks for sharing this one.
Thanks a lot for the generous comments. Glad you enjoyed the picture.
