Million light years away

Hi, everyone!

This past weekend me and a friend went into the mountains in hope of catching the sunrise after a clearing snow storm. We did a short night trek to a pretty good spot, but the sunrise caught us looking at a colourless landscape with only a yellowish fog layer hovering above us. Not very good from a photography point of view, but quite amazing to see in person. On the way back, I spotted this gnarled dead trunk that, given the conditions we experienced earlier, made me think of an alien spaceship that crashed long time ago. Maybe my imagination is overreacting here, so I'd love to hear your opinions.

I like this very much, the FG trunks, the trails caused by the wind blown snow, along with excellent light and exposure. Love it, beautiful work Dorin.

Alien spaceship, what else were you and your friend doing up there??

I will admit I don't see the spaceship, but I do like the comp here and your bw treatment. I like the muted light and the frozen details as well. Nice capture.

Kevin, I tried to stay away from all of the good stuff. I almost succeeded.

I love the perspective here Dorin. I get the feeling I am sliding down the hill and am going to hit that branch. Wonderful motion!

nice perspective, my friend. I like you´re processing here. the muted light enchances the mood a lot, imo, and the fg lines are very nice too. no nits at all. very nice comp.

I see where you're going with this Dorin, nice find! My only nit is that my eye feels as though it's being pulled down the slope on the left (can't think of a way to fix that though).

I really like it. but, yes, floris is right about the left side which draws the viewers eye down and out of the frame. maybe a small crop from the left could help - not sure.

Wow Dorin, what an exquisite light!
I almost have the same impression about something that is resting beneath the snow surface...both scaring and intriguing.

Nice job!

Giovanni.

Hola Dorin! Great image. Very graphical and dynamic, and yes, those trunks really set your imagination free. I also agree with some others about the fact the eye is pulled out of the frame at the left. That has happened in some of my images too. Diagonals are always strong and dynamic lines that add a lot of visual tension and interest to images. But they are so powerful, than they ca easily "take you" to places you do not want to go, pulling your eyes in dangerous directions. If the diagonal comes from the very corner, that effect is magnified. I would say, in those conditions, the only possibility is cropping so that the diagonal comes from far the corner, or using a "visual containment" element (rock, distinct feature, colourful stuff) which intersects the diagonal and stays close to the where it leads out of the frame. Like that, the eye which is eager to follow the diagonal will stop at that point and come back into the frame.
What I would do here in this image is croppinga square format, keeping the right side of the image, with the left side of the trunks coming from the middle of the left-frame and keeping as focal point the distant leaning small tree which stays at the confluence of the trunks and the snow lines. That would make a really nice image in my opinion, even better than this one!

Look, I learnt something from you image too! :) Great image anyway, and i am happy you had a great experience up there.
Ne vedem!
