Mist, Ice, Dawn

At the end of a long work week, getting out of bed early on Saturday and heading into a cold morning is not always an easy sell. It wasn't for me this past Saturday, but I was rewarded by some very unique and dynamic conditions at my favorite of all locations.

Phenomenal comp. Love the atmosphere as well. B&w is an idea. This scene looks very 3-d, superb work.

Ben - Black and white is a direction I considered for the other photos taken immediately around the time I made this one, but there is a color depth in this scene that I find really valuable. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm conveying that relevance in color very well in this presentation. While I worked pretty diligently to curb blues and enhance warmth in parts of the photo, the info palate still shows blue being the dominant color in most of the places I had hoped to warm up. I wonder if the neutral tones look "warm enough" in the context of the cool blues in most of the scene.

The mist is a welcome new addition to your portfolio of icy scenes, love it! It adds a depth that seems to be hard to capture in other typical conditions.

Very well done, Kent. You captured this mood so well. I'm not sure about going B&W as I like the soft cyan look of the ice that might be gone after the conversion and look like ordinary rock.

Very ethereal Kent. I like the subtle color throughout and the comp works well. I think some of the mystery would be lost in B&W.

A beautiful image Kent, really delicate, the fog is fantastic and there is still a lot of detail to see.

Thanks for the comments all. You're right about the fog being more than just icing on the cake in this photo, transforming the whole scene into something more exotic. My wife and I both had the same response to the image, that it looks more like Greenland or Antarctica than a few miles down the road from our house.

A very nice atmospheric shot with mood. I hear you about the effort to get out of bed early on Saturday to get out into the cold. Well, at least this effort paid off nicely.

Kent: I love the image. A lot of mood in it.

But I am laughing reading your last comment - having this place a few miles from house is probably anyone's dream. Where you live is as much exotic as Greenland or Antarctica - looks like it's all relative

Arnab - Yes, I think "exotic-ness" is definitely relative. On the other hand, you would never catch my wife or me downplaying the "wonderful-nee" of where we live.

Beautiful, I love the cool color palette and find the warmth in certain parts quite lovely. The atmosphere is stellar with just enough detail to hold my attention and make me explore.

lots of mood here added with the mist. i like the warm flush that comes in from the right (that would obviously be lost in a b&w conversion). nice work.

Kent, I love the subtle shades in the shadow of the triangle. Seeing the fog makes me wonder if you almost fallen into the ice, not that I want you to but just gets my curiosity going. Be careful!

This is very nice, Kent. The composition is really beautiful as are the muted colors. There is a sense of tranquility that is coming through very strongly.

Steve - Though the darkness and fog combined to limit visibility quite a bit, I actually had more thoughts of falling through the ice on the lake as I walked back across under sunny skies. The warming air temperatures (probably upper thirties in the sun) were causing the lake ice to give off huge cracks and thumps every few seconds. Fortunately, despite the very mild winter, the ice is still a half foot or more in thickness, so no worries.

Fantastic Kent. The fog really sets this apart from so many ice/glacier images. That and your superb composition. Gorgeous work.
