Mallard Bathing

I took this while I was in the photo blind at the Tualatin River NWR.
It was overcast and raining. I rented the lens and was still getting used to my camera. The ISO was set too high but there doesn't seem to be any noise that I need to worry about.

Nikon 500mm f/4.0G ED VR AF-S SWM Super Telephoto Lens
Nikon D700
f/5.6
1/2500 sec
ISO 1600

Cheers,
Chad

I just tone mapped the 14-bit RAW image that I have and the colors came out much better I think. I prefer the tone-mapped image to the straight image. What do you think?

You can look at a larger size image of the tone-mapped image at:

Like the way the water has gripped across his back and the churned water behind the bird. Pano type composition suits and second image for me is much better.

Second image looks better to me. Don't normally see mallards covered with water like this.

I'm still playing around with the tone-mapping. I think the color is even better in this one and I don't think I have much of a halo. I don't want to push it too much. A larger version of the photo is here -
