This was taken a few years back in Pennypack Park in Philadelphia. The image reminds me of the current plight of honeybees whenever I see it.

D70s
ISO 200
1/320
Other info not recorded. Probably 180mm macro (manual lens)

The bee is sharp even though it's small in the frame, and I like the modest colours of the perch and the bg, which place the focus on the critter. Yep, I can see the "small bee in a big world", and their plight worries me too. I find this very appealing.

Hi, Katja. I'm glad you like it. Yes, I think the smallness of the bee in the frame helps add to the sense of vulnerability. And I think the imaginary dragon that it seems to be riding on the head of also represents its precarious position. I know honeybees are suffering in Europe as well as here in the U.S. (I'm not sure about elsewhere). But my sometimes extravagant imagination sees this essentially from a local perspective. I've read that Native Americans several hundred years ago used to call it "the white man's fly." It's not native here, but arrived with the early colonists and would advance ahead of them. Announcing their arrival as it were. The problems it's having here are a concern primarily because of their agricultural importance. I'm more worried about our native bees.

To me this represents this bee's plight in America. I can even imagine the spikes atop the Statue of Liberty on the right side of the frame.

As I think about it, it occurs to me the we may be the dragon.

The bee is quite cool; would have preferred the dragon to be in better focus for the theme, but its a neat shot. :wavey:
