Taken last May in a local wetlands. I really enjoy observing these little waders and hearing their "croaky" call. When seen in good light their breeding plumage just pops. All C&C welcome.

Great catch! I find these little herons very elusive, as they like toi hunt in the reeds.
Nice feather detail, eye, and perch.

Rich, this is not from a blind and it is auto focus. The 1D Mark II N will autofocus to f8 so it allows me to have autofocus with the 2x teleconverter. The perch is the top of a dead tree in the marsh. I am standing out in the open on a bike path that was built on an old railroad bed. There are several green herons that call this area home and this one happened to fly in and perch very cooperatively while I was attempting to locate one of the resident prothonotary warblers I heard singing.

Kirk,

I love your green heron shots and this is no exception. Great natural perch - but I'd cut a slice off the top

Kirk, I like this a lot. The pose, perch, colors--they all look great. I like this comp a lot but would also be interested in a vertical.

I very much like the intent stare down into ( presumably water )
I would not crop anything from the top otherwise it would become quite crowded.
A vertical crop might work, but this still looks fine .

Kirk,

I like the comp you used here and would not slice any thing off of the top, that would make it feel cramped above the bird's head. I love the pose, how the bird appears to be peering down with interest, the colors and the rustic character of the "perch".

Very nicely done.
