Brown Booby

Canon 7D, 500mm f/4, Handheld on a boat.

1/3200, f/6.3, ISO 400

Crop to 63% (11.4 of 18MP)

This is a Brown Booby, taken at Bird Island, off shore from Puerto Penasco. It's about an hour boat ride to islands where there are thousands of Brown Boobies and sea lions, as well as a smattering of Blue-footed Boobies, Magnificent Frigatebirds, and Red-billed Tropicbirds.

The boobies are definitely challenging to shoot. They are such lanky birds that they quickly fill the frame, without that many pixels actually being on the bird, which makes it hard to get much detail. It's also hard to get good detail in the underwings without blowing whatever small patch of whites are catching the sun. And of course shooting a moving target with a handheld big lens on a moving boat is a whole other story. I shot many many frames of these, and got some passable shots, but certainly nothing fantastic.

I'm interested to see what people think of this. I appreciate the sharpness, and the good look at the face, but wish that there was more detail in the rest of the bird. Your comments and critiques are very much appreciated. Larger version is available.

Brian I think you did great on the pose and sharpness. These seem to me like shooting the bald eagle with a white face and dark underparts. hard to get just right. Looks like you were able to lift that underside just enough but could you do more and control the noise in the whiter area?. I think I see a slight blue cast as well but I'm not sure Good job. :wavey:

Brian, what I like most about this image is the very simple comp that results from the blue sky and the slim lines of the bird. A very nice feeling to the image. I understand what you are saying about the bird filling the frame so quickly. You really almost need a FF shot to get the detail you want. Def something to strive for. I looks like you did about as good as you could on the exposure. When I shoot birds with lots of darks and lights I always try to shoot on the bright side to maximize the detail in the dark areas, especially under wings. I try to shoot just to the edge of blowing out the highlights and then bring the exposure down in RAW converter and get the highlights back in line in PS. Takes some practice, but it works for me. Anyway, a nice image of this species.

Hand held in a boat just gives me the jitters. I immediately see my camera and my lens in 7 feet of water. But, that being said this is a very fine flight shot of a bird I have never seen.

Brian,

I like the flight pose, the way you composed this and the simplicity of the image.

This looks a bit on the cool side to me, I would apply a temporary levels layer, click the middle (midtone gray) dropper, then touch the dropper to the mid gray tones on the chest towards where the chest begins to look white. That warms the image up and I can see a bit mmore detail under the wings.

Brian, great shot off a boat! the sharpness is very good and you handled the contrast very well. Hard to get the perfect pose, but this one is nice.

Nice flight shot Brian. Very well composed. Very nice detail, especially from a moving boat.

You sound almost apologetic about your photo, no need. The larger view looks very good, good detail and colors. Very sharp considering the conditions. I wonder if a monopod would have been helpful in these conditions?

I got these in flight recently & found them very difficult because the head markings are quite subtle and blurry which can make it seem like motion blur. This is a very good shot in the circumstances, and you may have hit on the perfect angle.
