Forked Tongue

The light was pretty harsh here, but I needed all of it to shoot at 1/500 sec. and still get enough DOF to catch the darting tongue of this common gartersnake. (I also shot some with my 150mm. macro, but the "headshots" just don't say "snake" like this view that includes more of the body.)

Canon 50D
Sigma 17-70mm.
1/500 sec. @ f/10; ISO 400
Handheld

Cool shot Wayne, I was just down on my hands and knees getting a shot at one of these myself. I like the way the snake's body leaves the photo and then twists back into the image. The DOF works well here for me and getting the forked tongue is a great touch. Well done.

Wow, this is awesome. I see these snakes occasionally, but I've never photographed them. I imagine you have to be pretty quick to get a decent comp and sharp focus. You obviously have figured it out. Well done. :toast:

Wayne, I really like his color against that rusty leaf litter and I especially like the color and clarity of his tongue. I like the position in the frame. He stands out surprisingly well against a busy background. The only items there that distract my eye a little are the stems just above his head, maybe because they are somewhat snakelike in their cylindrical shapes. I also enjoy the bits of green peeking through in the LLC.

The light is maybe a bit harsh but you handled it well in my opinion. i love your comp here how you placed the snake in the frame. The only thing that I don't really like ist the stems about the snake's head. It distracts me a bit. but it's minor.

I love seeing/photographing snakes and getting a shot that shows off the tongue is always icing on the cake. Lower angle would have improved it but it's not always fun/easy to get face to face w/a snake, even the harmless variety.

Wow, great job catching the tongue, and recording it so sharp. I did something like this last year, but the tongue was blurred. I agree, the whole body coveys snake better than just the head.
