Evening Grosbeak

Canon 7D, 500mm f/4 + 1.4x TC, Handheld.

1/1000, f/7.1, ISO 250, Evaluative metering w/EC -1/3

Crop to 90% (16.3 of 18MP)

A nice flock of Evening Grosbeaks spent the winter with me, visiting my feeder. I probably should have taken more shots than I did, but I took quite a few and ended up with some good shots of both sexes. They are just now starting to thin out, with fewer and fewer every day. They sure were welcome guests over the winter, much as I like juncos, it was a real treat to have these colorful birds around for a change.

On this shot, I like the active pose and the detail in black and white.

Fantastic job on the exposure, Brian! I like the pose and composition as well. If you could get just a tad more room behind the tail it might work even better. :toast:

Excellent handling of the whites - always tough with a dark bird. Nice pose and catch-light.

Very colorful bird. Neat capture and the background is very nice. I like the pose too, looks like he's contemplating a launch. :toast:

Great shot Brian. That's quite a rig for hand holding, but the results are wonderful. Nice sharp detail and very good exposure. Just wish for a little more space on the left.
