As Mike Lotito has said in his previous most recent post, his neighbor found this Owlet that fell out of a tree and he gave me call. We had a great time photographing 2 Owlets and 1 parent. I had searched for Owls all winter long and here they were 15 minutes from my house... figures.

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH
f/8
1/640s
ISO 400
-.33 EC

Cropped to 55%, sharpened the owl

Yeah, well...we all know how good you are at finding Owls. Pretty cool to have these babies around to pose for you. :toast:

Charlie,

Haha yea yea sorry about that! It was great to have it at eye level and we had our choice of backgrounds and angles - unfortunately it was right around noon. The other Owlet was way up in a tree.

Beautiful owlet and I like the way it is framed by the limbs of the old tree. The lichen on the tree is a nice extra touch of nature in the scene.

Nice shot, Luke. Baby owls do seem to be just about the epitome of cute. :toast:

I like this a lot as posted. A great bird and setting. I'm really glad you didn't find a way to make this into some sort of panoramic. But I wish you had used a tripod here and made this as sharp as it could have been.

Luke, I like the photo just as it is. I really like the eyes. I had my first chance this year with an Owlet. They remind me of a little teady bear. Wish I had my choice of settings though. Wonderful photo!

Hey Luke, really like how open this is. Most of my owlet shots are surrounded by branches. nice to see you had this oipportunity. Sharpness looks acceptable to me, but could have been better with tripod as Richard suggested.

good pose, and I love the lichens on the branch. It does look a little soft. I might try a little selective brightening of the eyes to see if I could make them pop out a little more without looking unnatural.

Thanks all.

This is one of the slower SS I used - I have other photos which will be posted that were shot at 1/800 and I think a bit higher. Part of the softness is due to the crop down to 50%.

An owl baby boom of sorts on NPN! Very nice shot Luke. Given the lighting conditions we had very good job overcoming it.

What an evil looking creature! That aside, I really like the soft colours and the natural frame. Great shot!
