The Way Home

Sossusvlei, NAMIBIA
One of the decisive moments I have experienced as a photographer. This one was shot a few seconds after the other version in my gallery. It has a different feel and emotional impact when I view it.
I had spent the afternoon exploring the massive red dunes of Sossusvlei. As the sun set I was perched in an elevated position to capture the last light of the day hitting some of the lower dunes. Most of the area was already in shadow. I noticed a lone oryx approach the last dune still illuminated by light and hoped it would reach the crest. Just as it was about to do so, it appeared to head down the slope again. However in the dying seconds of light left it changed direction again and walked across the peak.
