Gorge Scouting

This gorge officially opens up at May 1st. I've been there today to check how the conditions of the ladders are and to check the water level. The workers there are still fixing some ladder damages from winter and so I only went up there as far as it felt save.

This is the first waterfall within the confined area of the official gorge. It takes only a few ladders to reach it and so this was a rather easy subject.

Canon 5DMII, Zeiss VS 35-70mm@35, f/16-ISO100, 3 exposures (1/6s,1s,2.5s), Hoya HD Polarizer. Software used - Capture One, Photoshop CS4, Nik Viveza, Nik Color Efex, Tony Kuypers Luminosity Masks.

Thanks for all comments and critiques. If you have the time check out the LARGER version.

Enjoy spring everybody!!!

Andreas, nice intimate scene.
I'd be a fan of a slight vignette to make the water falls even more focused.

Thanks for the advice, Matt. I usually don't use intentional vignetting, but after trying it here, it looks better.

Very cool! Great composition, Andreas. I love how the splash goes in differnt directions and how silky it looks. Beautiful!

I like it Andreas. There's a good flow in the comp. Technically it's again absolutely flawless. I also like this accumulation of driftwood. A small feature I also appreciate in this comp. is the lower left corner - quite the opposite of a distracting element - it enhances the whole scene for me.

Hi Andreas

Lovely corner! I love the way how the foreground rock introduce the photograph and the color of the water in the middleground.

The background fall carries too much water to get the texture but it's a minor nit

Best regards

Andreas, I agree with Matt very intimate scene indeed. I like the warm colors mixing in with the shadows. It's great as is but I wouldn't mind seeing the shadows a little more emphasized to add to the depth. Beauty!

Andreas,
good exposure. This is a beautiful scene. Love the silky look of the water. Great natural looking colors. The driftwood add a lot to this scene.

Hi Andreas,

I think your processing looks phenominal! The comp is a bit tight on the top and bottom for my tastes, but it doesn't seem like its bothering anyone else. I personally would have tried to move the driftwood for a cleanier look and I sure people will have beef with that too. Excellent work!

The water falling off the lower cascade is just sweet. Nice comp and I think it has all the right elements. Curious how you like the Nik software seems like a lot of folks use it. After raw is that pretty much all you need to use or is it just for certain photos?

Great job Andreas

There is a lot going on in the image. I really like the foreground water coming off the rock. The driftwood adds a naturalness to the image and adds some interest. The falls is then repeated in the background. Well thought out and composed.

3D. Beautiful scene Andreas. Sharpness and depth of field are impresive. Love the framing too. Cheers

Love the water and comp here, but would like more room on both the top and the bottom.
Nice detail and colors.

Thanks for all your comments - as always it's so great to see my images with different eyes.

@Anthony - I use Nik Viveza 2 "ALL THE TIME" for my nature images. It's a swiss knife that nothing can beat as far as quick and efficient local adjustments. Saves me a ton of time. Nik Color Efex I mostly use in water and cloud images to get a little more detail out of the highlights. The "Tonal Contrast" feature in Color Efex is what you might want to look for in this case. Both version have trial version on the Nik homepage to test for - I think - 15 or 30 days.

The falls are very pretty, but what really catches my eye is the color and textures of the walls, especially in the larger version.

Ladders!? Sounds like an adventure Andreas. The results were definitley worth the effort (and risk?).
