This is a shot from Isla Popa, near Bocas Del Toro in Panama. The island is mostly uninhabited, except for a few native (though westernized) familes, and a small resort. Staying at the resort, we did some hiking around the island, and came across a couple of these scenes. It is the beginnings of a canoe, being carved out of a solid tree. The trees used are usually the largest they can find, and are felled and carved in place. It's an area of Panama, and an island, that's pretty environmentally conscious, and it's interesting to see the indigenous practices still going - and maybe being the most destructive thing happening on the island.

PS - I debated whether his should go in M&N or EPJ...moderators feel free to move it if there isn't enough N for M&N.

Thanks for looking...

Interesting David. It's hard to get a sense of scale. Obviously it's very long and I suppose barely wide enough to sit in. Apparently there is no fast food on Isla Popa.
