Happy Mothers Day to all you Moms out there! :toast:

This Mother, Daughter Black Rhinoceros were located in Lewa Downs Wildlife Refuge near Isiollo, Kenya. Although very successful, the refuge is still plagued with poaching  as recently as this last December.

Thanks for Looking!

Great shot, Neil! I like the placement on momma. It would have been a great shot with her alone, but including the daughter is a bonus. I really like the color on the rhinos too... Mud?
I wish it were legal to hunt poachers! I'd really have no sympathy or remorse eliminating those bastards!

Wow, look at the mom's horn...that should be intimidating enough, you would think... . Thankfully the jambiya/dagger handle market in Yemen is slowing down....but the demand in Asia is ever-climbing.

What a fine Mother's Day image! I really like it. I was really perplexed by the red ocher skin tones, but Rick's query about mud makes me think it is probably red clay dust or perhaps mud. Do they do dust or mud baths?

I especially like the colors and the green thorn in her mouth is a wonderful accent. Good eye detail, too! I also like the grass in front of baby, giving the image a greater sense of depth.

This is going to get real tight if printed, with scarcely enough space around for a mat. The bottom, especially, could use some room for virtual feet. I would experiment with some additional selective sharpening for the baby's face and horn. All that said, this is quite pleasing, as posted!

Lon & Rick,
Do they do dust or mud baths?

Yes, the coloration is from their favorite mud/dust bath site. You can see the more natural color in the folds of skin on the mothers front legs, but even that has some clay cast. Coloration can vary dramatically from individual to individual. Especially during the dry seasons. During the rainy season they are more uniform in color, light to medium dark grey.

Rick,
It would have been a great shot with her alone

I'll work one up soon!
Thanks for the comments.
Cheers!

I love this image, Neil! And that expression on the mother's face - as if she is looking at the tip of her horn to remind you not to come closer! :toast:

Nice look at these deceptively docile rhinos.
