Shot early morning D7; F9.0; 1/1000; ISO 250; Crop to 54% of original; Canon 100-400 ISL; Gitzo tripod; PP in ACR and CS4 with Nik SW plugins.

I could also title this "Bottom's Up" or "The Headless Bird". I know this is an unusual avian pose, but I just love the frozen water.
The conglomerate (concrete and rock) in the background is a bit distracting, but one has to shoot when the opportunity presents its self.

Comments good or constructive are welcomed. I live on the gulf coast of Texas...does anyone have an idea of what bird this is? The next post will name the bird and show the bird just before the attack.

Every now and then someone posts an interesting wading bird pohto like this and they are always fun. This one turns me on my head a little bit as it looks like it's crooked but I believe it's straight - it would have been much more appealing to have the diving bird facing you.

As for the species, looks like a Great Blue Heron

Great action, I like the frozen splash, and the deep blue water.

Dottie, your bird is a Yellow-crowned Night Heron I believe. The legs are the wrong length and color for a Great Blue and the pattern on the wings fits the yellow-crowned to a T.

I like the splashing water and the pose of the heron. I think this may have been better at a lower angle and would have helped perhaps to minimize the conglomerate in the background, though I don't know if a lower angle was possible.

Nice post. The photo is crisp and I like the frozen water action. I know you've complained about noise with the D7, but I don't see any here. I agree it's probably a Night Heron.

A nice fun photo! I like the frozen water and the detail of the heron. Too bad IMHO you could not have gotten more of the reflection, but what you have is nice. Thanks for posting.
