Elegant Trogon

D300, 500mm f/4, tripod
1/250 sec at f/14, ISO 400
Cropped to 60% of full frame. Sharpening and other minor adjustments with LR2 and CS3. The clone tool was used to reduce distracting effects of OOF foreground branches to the left of the bird.
Photo taken April 6, 2010 at Patagonia Lake State Park in southeastern Arizona. At the head of one of the hiking trails, I was told that an Elegant Trogon had been spotted and was given information about where to look. I think I took a wrong turn, but as I was about to retrace my path to the major trail the bird flew past me and landed behind me. The bird chose various perches, all behind lots of branches, but finally settled down in one spot, still in pretty dense cover. Two birders that I met on the trail found a small opening providing a fairly open view and this photo was taken through the opening by lowering the tripod so that the camera was about six inches above the ground. The bird stayed on this perch for many minutes and I took many shots, constantly varying settings. This is my favorite pose of the set because of the head position and better light on the head of the bird.

David,

Thank you for the sugestions and comment on my post.
As for this image --it is stunning. I might like a little more room on the left but I would also like to be able to take a shot this spot on!! Great job.

Nicely done. I need to get back down to southern AZ as I haven't seen a trogon now for a few years.

There's been an Elegant Trogon thats been spending the winter at Patagonia Lake for a few years now but it usually requires a wet hike up the creek that feeds the lake to find it.

This is the full-frame view through the small opening. There is still a lot of clutter around the bird. No Photoshop work on this version.

I assumed these were tropical birds, although Arizona is quite "tropical" compared to nw Alberta where I am. Your perseverance created some good luck and the result is excellent. You did very well in capturing the nuances of color in the feathers. :toast:

Very Beautiful, David. I like the mottled light and it didn't end up being at all harsh. The bg works very nicely and it's an excellent composition. Superb job on the exposure. Given the conditions, this is a great shot. I'd love to have taken it. :toast:

great job finding a way to get a clear shot, David! I think this turned out very well. I'm heading down to SE AZ for a few days soon and would be happy to get a shot this nice.

I was at Patagonia State park that week and looked for this bird but never did find it so I know how clutter the environment is around the creek area. Glad you found the trogon, great job on getting this difficult bird, well done.

That's a beautiful bird both in colour and detail and it's amazing how nature can reproduce itself like this. It's really rewarding when you get a sudden find like this and this is an excellent environmental shot. Graham

Beautiful bird. The detail and colors are outstanding. I can see a little bit of the effects of the cloning. Might want to clean that up a little.

This guy may be the most reliable Trogan in AZ but also the most photographed. He has wintered there for a number of years and I have some shots of him there too. But, that said, you did a great job capturing him here. Well done David.
