Mating Tigers

Well, the tiger beetles were out and about all over the place, and I managed to find this cooperative couple...they actually stayed in one spot for a fairly long time before the female scooted off dragging the male along with her.

The tigers seem to like the birch branches that are scattered on the ground, but it does make for an awfully contrasty shot.

Taken with the Canon 5D MkII and MPE-65 ISO 400 160s f16 handheld with MT24-EX flash. (Liveview is so awesome for macros with this lens...I can't say enough about it!)

Cheers,

I like your lens and flash choice!

More seriously, I think my main nit would be the contrast level here, but you've already addressed that. It is always a tossup with these beetles - either good light or good color on the metallics of the beetles.

A really cool beetle. Would like to see this with nicer light, but the bugs only come out during certain times. And yes, Liveview is a Godsend in the macro dept.

Good macro comp. The lighting is a bit harsh as you have mentioned but sometimes you just have to take what is there. Perhaps a diffuser may help.
