Forest Floor

The forest floor along The Big Tree Trail on Meares Island Tofino, Vancouver Island British Columbia, Canada. An old growth rain forest in the Pacific NW. Of all the temperate rain forests in the NW, this is my favorite. My family and I were on this Island for serveral hours and never saw a single person. Our only guide was the dog of the boat captain who took us out here. He had wonderful stories to share of the area. I did get a little worried though when he said his dog would alert us to the presence of wolves and cougars..... Yikes! Anyway, we never saw either, and I liked this forest. It was raining and I had a difficult time keeping drip drops off the lens. Pointing the lens down seemed to work.

Please look at the large version for more detail. Compression and sharpening are definately killing this.

Canon 40D
Canon EF-S 10-22mm at 10mm
ISO200 1sec f/16

Thanks for looking and for any comments and critiques you wish to leave.

I really like this, you found a nice composition out of nothing! I specially like all the deatils on this forest floor, the tree hole, the plants, the reflection very nice.
Crisp image and quite an unique find.

Beautiful Eva. The larger version really shows the amazing detail which is a highlight of this image. I do think it's a touch over-sharpened, and it doesn't look like it needs much. Backing off on the sharpening will also remove some of the sharpening highlights and the image will appear richer in color. Great idea to point the camera down in the rain and find something this nice at your feet. Very nice flowing composition here.

I love the sprinkling of ferns around the scene and the overall comp. The brighter water and larger clump of ferns in the upper left balance the image well for me. I'll echo the over-sharpened comment, but really nicely seen. I try things like this now and then and not this successfully!

I agree with John--this is sweet! A little different than your other posts, which is good. I love the detail, and that one little reflective pool makes the shot for me!

That's just a really nice comp with an excellent mix of color and nice light. The reflection giving a glimpse of the canopy and sky is a great addition.

Eva,

This is wonderful. So much to enjoy and explore here. That reflection really grabs my attention - in a positive way. In fact I think it's a bit deceiving because it almost doesn't look like a reflection. It's as if there's actually sky in the background. And there's nothing really that tells me there's water in the image. Anyway, maybe I'm just "seeing" things.

Would agree that at least in the large version that it's slightly over sharpened. Perhaps a duplicate layer and selectively sharpening some aspects, but the teenie plants/leaves at the bottom got a little over sharpened. But regardless, this is a thoroughly enjoyable scene.

A really fine forest shot. You've made a composition that makes sense of the complexity and the elements are all very interesting and hook me in for a closer look.

It seems to me that this isn't easy to pull off. I would think you would need to get more intimate, or more expansive. But this seems just right. Nice job composing this one.
