Spring Runoff at Glacier + BW Version

A two-shot stitch of runoff in Glacier NP. What a great time to visit except for only limited areas open. Sure enjoyed it.

Anyway, this is an unnamed creek near Apgar Village. I put the snag in there on purpose because the flow of water looks to have shaken the young tree to pieces. Perhaps just my imagination, but it captured for me the destructive aspect of water.

D700, 70-200 @ 70 on tripod; f 18, 0.4, ISO 200.

After being gone awhile it's fabulous to come home and see all the good work everyone is posting. Kudos to all for the great work!

I like this, has an enchanting quality to it--and nice depth. Might make a nice B&W too.
If you have any GNP cascade shots--theres still 2 days left in this weeks Challenge

this really captures the rushing, engulfing water. the tight comp filled with that rush gets it all. nicely done.

Tasty wild feel to the shot. I too would like to see it in B&W.

Here's a B&W version. Thanks for the suggestion! Not too sophisticated about b&w...; just used a one-click setting in CS3... Does this look like you expected? Nice surprise for me!

I like the B&W best Catherine. Only a suggestion, but I would be tempted to tone down the brighter areas in the water (diagonal from lower left cornor), Just me. I like the comp and the silvery tones and the motion.

The square crop works well with the composition and I like the way the creek snakes through the scene. Perfect exposure and textures in the water.

This feels almost flood-like with the trees so close to the water. Light looks good and s-curve definitely pulls me through the frame.

Catherine,

Excellent capture! This almost doesn't look natural - what I mean is that the run off is so high that just seems like it's a spot where water doesn't normally flow. Hope that makes sense. Excellent detail and sharpness front to back - great depth with the inclusion of that forward tree. The square crop works perfectly here and of course the flow and s-curve make for a nice composition.

The b&w does work, but for me at least the highlights in the water get more of my attention; where as in the color version, less so.

Hi, Lon! Thanks for the comment. I agree about this being an unlikely place for water to be running so high. We looked all over but found no posted sign for the name of this "creek." Unusual for a national park and for a stream so close to a visitor's center and all. So we guessed it was seasonal. Some torrent for a "runoff" huh. We were obviously impressed!

And I believe you and Eva are correct, about the highlights esp. in the b&w version. I'll be toning 'em down.

Great lines and patterns flowing into the foreground I am enjoying the power here for certain.
