Dream Lake

by Shaun Mazurek

Gallery: LandscapePosted June 17, 2010252 views9 comments
This is my first attempt at a Dream Lake shot with ice floating in the foreground. After 3 consecutive attempts I was not able to quite capture the image I wanted before the ice melted.

I shot this with a Canon 5D Mark II and a 17-40 L. I also used a 3 stop hard step graduated neutral density filter(Sigh Ray).

Any constructive criticism or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for taking a look.

I am not sure if this image works better in black and white. Any thoughts? I think the contrast in the black and white pulls a bit more out of the minimal clouds in the sky.

I like the reflection and ice foreground. The vignette is a bit strong for my tastes. I'd open it up and brighten the sky a bit. I prefer the color version.

Id stick w the color, but there are a few problems here; the blue is way too intense (especially the sky, a warmer WB might help), the shadows on the sides are too blocky (need to see more detail--hdr perhaps) and the jpeg is a bit soft. It looks like a great moment to be at Dream though, and the ice is pretty neat!

Thank you Ron and Stan,
I have tried a less aggressive contrast curve to open up the shadows and desaturated the blue and applied a lens correction filter to try an tone down the vignette. I have also used unsharp mask to try and make the JPEG a bit crisper. Hopefully this looks a bit better.
Thanks again for the feedback, I really appreciate it. :)

I really like the update. I think the clarity really improves it. Also, the blues and warm light are great. I'd update the title to include "update" or something to see if anyone would followup on the latest post.

I definitely prefer the color version, Shaun. I also prefer the processing in the first version, though it would certainly benefit from some sharpening for web.

hugh improvement on the repost, the sky has improved dramatically and the sharpness is much better. Only thing I can see still would be brightening up the tree line a bit on the left hand side. Nice image.
