The Sharp Edge of Light

Passing clouds filter the tropical sun, throwing brushstrokes of light across an endless sea of dunes. I took this midway through my trek across the lakes and dunes of Lencois Maranhenses, Brazil. If you look carefully at the foreground you can see the footprints of a roaming goat that lives in a nearby oasis. A small crystalline stream runs between two lakes below the dunes and these fresh water lakes make the dunes of Lencois unique in the world. After taking this image, I wandered back to my oasis camp in the dark and I thought about a favorite passage by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry as he awaited rescue in the middle of the Sahara:

"Sitting in the flickering light of the candles on this kerchief of sand, on this village square, we waited in the night. We were waiting for the rescuing dawn - or for the Moors. Something, I know not what, lent this night a savor of Christmas. We told stories, we joked, we sang songs. In the air there was that slight fever that reigns over a gaily prepared feast. And yet we were infinitely poor. Wind, sand, and stars. The austerity of Trappists. But on this badly lighted cloth, a handful of men who possessed nothing in the world but their memories were sharing invisible riches."

Love the sensual curves of the dunes and the distinct areas of light and darkness. This is an image that really challenges the viewer to discover minor areas of interest as well as enjoying the more major areas. Beautiful image Mike.

Gorgeous play on light. The strong contrast, warm light, and deep blue sky are such mood setters. A bit of noice in the darks of the foregroun, but probably just an artifact of web presentation

Hi Mike,
I love the idea, the light and the composition. It's a wonderful image, the distant dunes with that beautiful light really catch my eye.
Great work!

Great light and colors. The shadow and light is really interesting to look at in this image. It looks like it would make a great pano if cropped about where the dark shadow starts half way up the image too, but like it alot as it is too. Some very nice lines in this. Nice work, Mike.

Outstanding Mike! Initially I thought what a great panoramic this would make - and I still think it would as an alternate presentation. BUT, taking a moment or two to absorb and "see" the tracks and appreciate the soft gradient of light is what adds that special element to this capture.

Great work as always Mike. We appreciate you sharing your images.

great play of light and the warm soft color works so well. I kinda prefer a pano crop of the bottom.

Very graphical and abstract, Mike! One can easily lose the sense of space (and time) if enjoying the subtle light long enough. The excerpt is as beautiful as the image. Mike, you're a very talented photographer.

Im back and forth on a little off the bottom, but otherwise the light and color contrast make this great. The first time you shot here or similar area, I knew it was somewhere I would have to visit one day.

Unique light for sure Mike. Looking at the shapes and mainly the colors reminds me some Dalí scenes, isn´t it?. Outstanding work
