Colorado Lion w/ REPOST

I was searching for bears in one of my usual spots when a couple of mule deer shot out of the oak brush in front of me, heads held high, bleating and running for their lives. I was sure that a bear was nearby searching for fawns, and was extremely surprised when a big lion exited the brush behind them. It stalked directly toward me (it's eyes never left mine the entire time), coming to within about 40 feet of me. A group of cub scouts came up the trail at that moment and the lion hit the deck, hiding in the tall grass for the next hour, until the group of kids and parents left.

It's not the greatest photo (light was low, I had no time to adjust shutter speed, and I was shaking like a leaf, even with my tripod), but it's my first halfway decent cougar shoot (walked away with maybe ten keepers) and my first sighting of the year - hopefully not the last!

What a fine encounter! I like the positioning of the lion in the frame, and the direct eye contact tells much of your story. My suggestion would be to tweak the white balance setting a bit to remove the slight magenta cast. Congrats on this highlight event and the capture!

Thanks for the comments guys. Lon - after looking at this image with "fresh eyes", I have to agree with your suggestion - how's this repost?

I like the inclusion of habitat in this photo, he fits right in. You were so fortunate that he stayed in the open like that! I also like the open mouth of the cougar, gives him a little bit of attitude. The repost looks better on my monitor but I think it could still use a little more work, perhaps a bit darker and a touch more contrast (original seems better in this regard).

What a special experience, Guy! Great image too. While the repost might be more 'true', I find the original version much more pleasant to view. The lion stands out more, and the darker treatment works better for me.

Must have been an amazing encounter Guy! I quite like that the cougar is small in the frame and somehow lost in its habitat, yet it pops out like you cannot believe! Maybe it is that fascinating face?
I agree that the repost maybe more true, but feel the original post is more attractive to look at. Maybe the truth lies somewhere in the middle...

Amazing shot. Either post is OK with me. Too bad the scouts came by or you may have gotten some close ups! Thanks for posting.
