Twin Lake Moonrise+RP
by Scott Smorra
Moonrise over Upper Twin Lake, Mt Hood Wilderness, Oregon. This photo is from Saturday night. It had been quite a while since I have seen the full moon rise while out on a backpacking trip...always a cool experience.
Nikon D80, 12-24mm dx lens. 3 exposure blend.
1) 5.5 sec at f/16, ISO 100 taken during twilight to maintain some texture in the water/trees.
2) 30 sec at f/4, ISO 200 - 30 minutes later for the stars/sky.
3) 27 sec at f/22, ISO 400 - 45 minutes later for the "moon star".
All C&C are appreciated. Please view large. Best viewed in a dark environment.

6 commentsExcellent work and execution with the night-time and star, and moon photography! This is a terrific starry-night image. And including the moon-start works very well in the image. The only thing I'm torn about is the logs (I think they're logs) in the water. There's just not enough light to really make out or figure out their part of the composition. Obviously it's dark, so I'm not expecting great detail, but for me it's a "tweaner." It's in between wanting to see more detail or none at all. I think this would be an effective and strong image without the water and of course that's your call. I do like the reflected light of the moon, but the log right next to it kinda takes away from the moonlight. Regardless of those points though, I think this is excellent night photography. Looks great in the noise department too - lack of noise that is.
